breadboards are connected internally like this:

You should try to make it a habit to have the red (positive) up and the
blue (negitive) down, this makes it a better match for properly drawn
schematics.
A properly drawn schematic, has positive on teh "top", negitive on the
"bottom", "Inputs" on the left, and "outputs" on teh right.

and there is proof that even a 5 year old can draw a good schematic.
